Description

Think of Sri Lanka and you probably picture pristine beaches and turquoise water. But there is far more to this teardrop island than its coastline. This walking holiday takes you through the Cultural Triangle and on into the tea country of the Highlands. The beaches may get the postcards, but Sri Lanka’s soul lies inland! Discover frescoed rock and cave temples older than memory, then climb higher, where tea terraces rise into the mist and the best way to reach the clouds is on foot.

Itinerary

  • Day 1Colombo to Sigiriya

Your driver-guide meets you at the airport and carries you north into the island’s ancient heart. On the way, the Dambulla Cave Temple opens up: a UNESCO-listed hillside sanctuary where over 150 Buddhas keep watch beneath ceilings painted two thousand years ago. By evening you are in Sigiriya, with a quiet hotel and the famous rock somewhere in the dark ahead of you!

  • Day 2Sunrise, village lanes and a fortress in the sky

Wake before dawn and climb Pidurangala Rock in the dark. Forty five minutes later you are on the summit as the light spreads, with Sigiriya’s great granite silhouette rising out of the mist across the jungle. Linger an hour, then descend for breakfast.

Mid-morning, swap boots for bicycles and spend two hours rolling through village life: paddy fields, home gardens and the rural reservoirs that have watered this land for centuries. Rest through the afternoon heat.

Then, as the light turns gold, climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress itself, the 5th-century royal citadel crowning a 200-metre monolith, with its legendary frescoes, mirror wall and lion’s-paw gateway. Starting at around 3:30–4:00 pm gives you three unhurried hours before the 6:30 pm closing. Bring your passport; it’s required for entry.

  • Day 3Sigiriya to Kandy: Spice, scent and fire

Visit Dambulla now if you missed it on Day 1 (allow two hours). Then stop at Matale’s National Spice Garden, where a guided walk among cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and clove shows why traders once crossed oceans for this island. Take home spices and oils.

Arrive in Kandy, the last royal capital, in time for the 5:00 pm cultural performance, ninety minutes of pounding drums, whirling dancers and a fire-walking finale.

  • Day 4Kandy to Norwood - A sacred relic, then up into the clouds

Begin at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Lanka’s holiest Buddhist shrine, where devotion hangs thick in the air alongside incense and temple drums. Then climb for about three hours into the hill country, as the air cools and the tea estates close in, steep and misty.

Reach Norwood by mid-afternoon for a three-hour tea garden tour at a working estate, following the leaf from bush to plucker to cup.

  • Day 5Norwood to Bogowantalawa - A full day in the Golden Valley of Tea

Today is all walking. The trail winds through rolling estates, plantation villages and patches of forest, with long views across hills stitched in green. This is the Golden Valley of Tea, and you will cross it on foot, at the pace of those who work it. You will spend the night in Bogowantalawa, Dayagama or another estate town along the way.

  • Day 6Horton Plains National Park - Cloud forest, open grassland and a river’s beginnings

Enter Horton Plains National Park at Dayagama and cross it on a 10.5 km trail to Ohiya. The path is gentle and almost level, running through dripping cloud forest and wide, wind-combed grasslands. Along the way you’ll pass the source of the Mahaweli, Sri Lanka’s longest river, here just a trickle. Energy permitting, add the hike to the dramatic drop at World’s End. Descend to Ohiya and settle in for the night.

  • Day 7Ohiya to Ella - The most scenic train ride in Sri Lanka

Board the hill train for ninety minutes of tea terraces, dark tunnels and valleys full of drifting mist, a journey regularly ranked among the world’s most scenic. In the afternoon, walk to the Nine Arches Bridge, a graceful colonial-era viaduct curving through the tea, and watch the train pass.

Choose from Ella’s many cafés in the evening and soak up the town’s vibrant nightlife.

  • Day 8Ella to Colombo Airport - The long descent to the lowlands

After breakfast, leave the hill country behind as the road winds down toward the lowlands and Colombo (about 6–6.5 hours), with your flight home and a week of trails, temples and tea behind you.
