FAQ

1. How difficult is the Deoriya Tal–Tunganath–Chandrashila trek?

It is a moderate Himalayan trek. You walk on four days, covering roughly 3 to 10 km a day in 3 to 6 hours. The hardest stretches are the long uphill to Rohini Bugyal followed by a steep descent to Syalmi on Day 3, and the early-morning climb to Chandrashila on Day 5. The final approach to Tunganath follows a concrete pilgrim trail.

2. Is this trek suitable for beginners?

Yes, if you are reasonably fit and comfortable walking 4 to 6 hours a day. The trails are well defined, and your Outdoers guide sets a steady pace. A few weeks of regular walking, stair climbing or jogging beforehand will make the climbs far more enjoyable.

3. What is the best time to do the Deoriya Tal–Chandrashila trek?

The best months are mid-March to mid-June and September to December. Spring brings blooming rhododendron forests, while the post-monsoon months usually offer the clearest views of Chaukhamba and the wider Garhwal Himalayas.

4. How high does the trek go?

The highest point is Chandrashila Peak at about 3,600 m. Deoriya Tal sits at 2,400 m, and the nights are spent between roughly 2,000 and 2,600 m.

5. How much does the Deoriya Tal–Tunganath–Chandrashila trek cost, and what is included?

Find the current pricing at our trek listing at https://www.outdoers.in/our-treks/deoriya-tal-tunganath-chandrashila. The price mentioned assumes a minimum group size of 8. 6. What is not included in the price?

Anything not listed under inclusions is not covered. This typically means flights to and from Dehradun, travel insurance, tips and personal expenses. Travel insurance is recommended.

7. Where does the trek start and end, and how do I get there?

On Day 6, the trip ends with a 185 km drive of around 6 hours from Chopta back to Dehradun airport, so please plan onward travel accordingly.

8. Where do we stay on the trek?

You stay three nights in comfortable resorts or luxury tents and camp for two nights, always on a double-sharing basis. Camps are set in scenic locations such as Deoriya Tal and Syalmi.

9. What will we see on the Deoriya Tal–Tunganath–Chandrashila trek?

You will see Deoriya Tal, a lake that mirrors the Chaukhamba peaks, Rohini Bugyal meadow, rhododendron forests and a natural stream pool on the way to Baniyakund. You will also visit Tunganath, the world’s highest Shiva temple. The trek ends with sunrise from Chandrashila Peak and sweeping views of the Garhwal Himalayas.

10. Can families and children do this trek?

Yes. Outdoers specialises in family-friendly treks and treks for school groups. Children should be comfortable walking 4 to 6 hours a day on varied terrain. If you are travelling with younger children, contact us and we will help you decide if this trek is right for them.

11. How safe is the trek, and what about altitude?

Outdoers guides are qualified wilderness first aid responders. The itinerary allows for proper acclimatisation, and the team carries a first-aid and has an emergency evacuation plan. The altitude is moderate, and the Tunganath approach is on a paved pilgrim trail. Travel insurance is recommended.

12. Can I book this trek on custom dates or as a private group?

Yes. Outdoers organises custom treks on your preferred dates, and the quote depends on group size and the number of days available. The maximum group size is 12, and group departures assume a minimum of 8. To plan your dates, write to hello@outdoers.in or call +91-82799-29473.

13. What should I pack, and what is the baggage limit?

Porters carry one bag per person weighing up to 12 kg, so pack your main gear in a single soft duffel or rucksack and carry a small daypack for water, a rain jacket, snacks and a camera. The essentials are broken-in trekking shoes with good grip, layered warm clothing for the cold Chandrashila sunrise, a rain jacket, a warm cap and gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and a headlamp. Contact us for a detailed packing list for your travel dates.

14. Will my mobile phone work on the trek?

Signal can be patchy or unavailable on the trail and at remote campsites, with better connectivity in towns such as Srinagar and Chopta. Share your schedule with family before you leave, and download offline maps and entertainment in advance.

15. Will Tunganath Temple be open when we visit?

Darshan at Tunganath on Day 5 is possible only if the temple is open. As a high-altitude shrine, it is typically closed during the heaviest winter snow and reopens in spring, so access depends on your travel dates. It typically remains open from the last week of April through the first week to November.  Chandrashila Peak is just 2 km beyond the temple, so the sunrise summit remains part of the trek either way.

16. How is this trek different from the standard Chopta–Chandrashila trek?

The standard Chopta route is a short out-and-back trek of one to two days to Tunganath and Chandrashila. This six-day trek, with four days on foot, begins at Deoriya Tal, crosses Rohini Bugyal meadow and rhododendron forests, camps at Syalmi, and passes a stream pool before climbing to Baniyakund. It ends with the Tunganath and Chandrashila summit. It is quieter and more varied, and the famous summit is the finale rather than the whole trek.
